DALI

What is DALI?

Digital Addressable Lighting Interface, named DALI, is a communication language. DALI facilitates the communication and therefore control of multiple devices such as ballast, transformers and other lighting equipment. Devices which speak the same language can exchange information, in much the same way people can exchange information when they communicate using the same language.

DALI devices

Designed on a distributed intelligent framework, each DALI device has on board memory that stores all relevant information about the device, including diagnostics, which reduces the technical requirements on the control system and the amount of data to be transmitted over the line.

The DALI standards

DALI is a lighting control standard defined under the European Standard IEC 62386 and for controlling electronic ballasts, transformers, LED’s, emergency lights and exit signs.

IEC stands for International Electrotechnical Commission and is a non-profit organization.

DALI was designed to replace traditional 1-10 V analogue systems and proprietary digital systems such as DSI (Digital Serial Interface).

At a maximum there can be 64 DALI devices on a single DALI line and it has a data baud rate of 1200 baud.

Electricity

The electrical compliance is also required:
– Every 25 years (periodic inspections of residential housing: apartment or house).
– Every 5 years (periodic inspections for shops, restaurant, tertiary… or residential housing in tourist rental).
– During the commissioning of a new facility.
– At a significant extension of the installation.
– At a substantial modification of the facility.
– At a temporary facility (on a construction site).
– In case of enhancing the power of the connection.

IoT (Internet of Things)

Generally, the Internet of Things refers to everything that has a connection to the Internet. However, it’s normally used to describe certain objects or devices that communicate with each other via the Internet. These devices don’t even need to be on the same network to communicate, as long as they are all connected to the Internet, communication between them is able to happen via the Internet of Things. IoT gathers data from all of the devices as well as being able to connect them so that actions can be carried out following analysis of the data.
